So, I created a video recently that answers the question of how to use Natty Butter and Natty Moist, two products that are available on my site Natty Products . I mainly get the questions, 'what is the difference' and 'how to use each one'. So, this video explains the details and I hope you enjoy.

Let's Talk Clean...How GREEN is Your CLEAN??

Hola Chicas/Chicos..I pray all is well with everyone.
Ok, so let's get down to the 'green' of things..No, literally. Now, we have discussed all about harmful chemicals in our hair and skin products, but how about those harmful ingredients that we use daily to clean our home. And with our little ones around, it frightens me just to think how those chemicals can not only be harmful to our environment, but extremely dangerous if our inquisitive little ones get hold to those products.  So, let's take a look at how 'green' our clean is...

What's The Big Deal About Regular Cleaners??
  • Well, many of the cleaners on the market designed for household cleaning actually add chemical contaminants into the air around you, the water outside and potentially your own bodies..Yikes!
  • The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports that the average home have as much as 100 pounds of environmentally harmful chemicals in the basement, garage and other storage areas. These very chemicals can contaminate your septic tank or pollute the groundwater if they're poured down drains or toilets.
  • The toxic ingredients in cleaning products can be dangerous to children and pets. A 2010 study published in 'Pediatrics' found that 267,269 children were treated in emergency rooms between 1990 and 2006 for injuries related to exposure to household cleaners.
  • Research has indicated that people who use chemical sprays, particularly glass cleaners, furniture polishes or freshening the air (plug ins), faced the risk of asthma.

So..What Should I Try To Avoid??
  • Try to avoid products that make vague claims, such as; 'natural' or 'non toxic' or 'eco friendly'..these claims are not backed by any federal or industry regulations. Even products that say 'biodegradable' seem earth friendly, but really, any substance will break down in time, under the right conditions.
  • Avoid cleaners containing surfactants such as: ALKYLPHENOL ETHOXYLATES (APE), DEA AND TEA(remember this ingredient is in EcoStyler Gel..Yikes), nerve damaging BUTYL CELLOSOLVE, CHLORINE, AMMONIA, FRAGRANCES containing PHTHALATES, the antibacterial TRICLOSAN and petroleum-based ingredients.
  • Avoid 1,4 DICHOLOROBENZENE (a volatile organic compound or VOC also known as 1,4 DCB)..This ingredient is what puts the odor in the infamous 'mothballs' and can also be found in insecticides, and it can trigger asthma.

Soooo, What Should I Look For??
  • Look for products from companies that name 'every' ingredient on the package or on their website..keep in mind, manufacturers are not required by law to list specific ingredients on their labels.
  • If you can't find detailed ingredients listing, select products that tell you what's 'NOT' inside...For example, 'No ammonia' ' No chlorine' 'No petrochemicals' 'No sodium lauryl or laureth sulfate'
  • Independent groups such as 'Green Seal' 'Cradle to Cradle' the 'Leaping Bunny' and the EPA analyze products and certify that their ingredients do not pose a risk to health or the environment.

Green Your Clean With Natural Pantry Products..Try These Suggestions
  • Windows: Mix equal parts White Vinegar and hot water and apply with a quality squeegee.
  • Kitchens, Bathrooms and Laundry: BAKING SODA!!! Sprinkle it on a damp sponge or cloth and it can be used as a gentle, nonabrasice cleaner for countertops, sinks, bathtubs, ovens and on fiberglass. Add a cup to your washer load and it will neutralize odors..It's great as a carpet refresher as well. For a nice fast working foam cleaner, combine baking soda to water, vinegar or lemon juice.
  • Furniture: Dust and polish your wood furniture with a mixture of one half cup of white vinegar and 1 TSP of Olive Oil...This works wonderfully. I actually add a few drops of lemon and tangerine oil for a wonderful fragrance.
  • Carpets and Rugs: To attack stains before they set in, douse the soiled area with club soda, then blot with a rag. Now, if you're dealing with a big stain, cover it with cornmeal (dump, rather than sprinkle), wait 5 to 15 minutes and vacuum. How about a nice spot cleaner..Put 1/4 c liquid soap and 1/3 c water into a blender and mix until foamy. Spray the mixture on the spot, then rinse with vinegar. For deorderizing..Sprinkle baking soda or cornstarch on the carpet, use 1 c per medium sized room, wait 30 minutes, vacuum.
  • All Purpose Cleaning: Borax, Borax, Borax..Mix 1/2 c of Borax with 1 gal of hot water. Make sure the Borax dissolves completely. Apply, then wipe clean with a rag..For spray bottle use: Use 1/8 c of Borax mixed with a quart of hot water and use as needed.

Additional Green Cleaning Tips:
  • Borax: Disenfects, Bleaches and Deorderizes.
  • White Vinegar: Disinfects and Breaks up Dirt..I can definitely attest to this one (Again, for a nice scent, I add sweet orange oil or tangerine oil and lemon oil)
  • Hydrogen Peroxide: Provides Bleaching and Disinfecting action
  • Lemons and Lemon Juice: Cuts Grease
  • Olive Oil: Picks up dirt and polishes wood
  • Vegetable Based (liquid Castile) soap: Serves as a nonpetroleum all purpose cleanser
  • Washing Soda: Removes stains, provides general cleansing, helps unblock pipes **(be sure to wear gloves when using)

Well, now that you are all equipped, let's go and green clean our home..

Happy Natty Day!

Let's Talk Hat Fashion: NOUNOU'S BOUTIQUE Crocheted Hat

Hola, Beautiful People..I pray all is well with everyone!!!

Ok, so the cooler months are fast approaching and for many of us, we love rocking beautiful crown pieces to not only keep our heads warm, but to keep our hair protected as well. Well, I have honestly been approached by a few vendors to try out their crocheted items and I am here to give you the SCOOP on this piece that I am rocking in this picture. Now, let me first say, I do love beanies, but, many times, the problem is that because my hair is oober thick and has gotten longer, I can't find nice ones that cover my hair to my liking and not slide off, which is ultra annoying, right?? Ok, so without further ado, here's the scoup on NouNou's custom piece.

NOUNOU...WHO ARE THEY??
  • Nounou's Boutique is a Virginia-based company that was founded in July 2011 by the creators of the Natural Nounou blog.
  • Their mission is to provide easier access to customers looking for high quality natural hair care products. Nounou's Boutique carefully evaluates and selects the products it carries in its store.
  • And more importantly, she is an artist who has an absolute love and passion for crocheting..well, let's see about that, shall we.

NOUNOU..THE ATON CROCHETED BEANIE..THE REVIEW

  • First, I love the fact that she offered the choice of customizing her pieces..A huge plus for me
  • When I received the item, I was immediately pleased with the colors and how they contrasted and complimented each other..if you notice, they are my ATON logo colors.
  • Now, let's talk about the quality...I absolutely loved it. My 1 yr old daughter even got a hold of it and was pulling on it..(looking shameful with tale tucked between legs, how did she get that?)
  • Another plus was that my husband observed it and compared it to many of the traditional beanies that he would rock..He absolutely loved the size and hinted around that the colors are neutral enough to where he could rock it as well (uhmmmm, I don't think so..it's mine and I'm hiding it!!! JK)
  • So, all in all, I am thoroughly enjoying the hat..I even chose to rock it once while it wasn't so cool out, and the best part, I didn't get overwhelmingly warm. I have already asked for her to create a new hat using the custom colors for my hubby..(yay, now he can have his own)..And yes, I would definitely recommend!! Visit NouNou's Boutique via facebook: facebook or visit her site at: www.nounouboutique.com
  • ** Natty Tip..with all hats that you will choose to wear for the cooler months ahead, be sure to protect your hair before you put on that glorious crown..Want to see how? So...What's REALLY The Scoop on DEEP CONDITIONING?

Hola Chica/Chicos...I pray all is well with everyone.
Ok, this is an interesting post today. The myths and truths on Deep Conditioning. Now, we have all heard of the benefits of deep conditioning. The time frame of how to get that really great intense deep conditioning. The goodies to add to the deep conditioning.  And the wonderful use of heat (steamer or heat cap) to get that really beneficial deep conditioning. So, what's really the scoop? Well, doing a bit of research came as a surprise to me as much as it may to you on the facts that I found. Oh, and lest I forget, I did my own experiment to see just what the scoop really is on Deep Conditioning.

DEEP CONDITIONING..DOES IT REALLY HELP?
  • Well, let's break down why we would need to deep condition. When we shampoo, it removes buildup as well as much of the sebum (oils) in our hair, leaving us with a squeaky clean scalp...so, conditioning replaces those oils, right? Well...it depends. When using a conditioner, many times it is benefiting the exterior or outside of the hair. They soften the hair, smooth the cuticle, minimize static and sometimes help lock in moisture from water. When we rinse our hair from conditioning, some of the conditioner is left behind, which is what give us the soft feeling. Deep conditioners formulated at lower ph levels do help to close the cuticle from being lifted during the cleansing process, which aids in less frizz, softening the hair and protecting the hair.

HOW ABOUT THAT HEAT WHEN DEEP CONDITIONING?
  • Well, let's just take a quick look at that..Now, we have all heard that when applying our deep conditioner, we should use heat to really get the most benefit out of our conditioner..Deep Conditioning to the MAX, right? Well, truth be told, most conditioners are made with ingredients that do not require the use of heat. So, in essence, using heat does not enhance the effectiveness. And, when a conditioner do say to use heat, there is no added benefit of applying heat for a longer period of time than the product recommends.
  • Ok, so I took on the challenge to see if this is fact or fiction...Now, I applied my conditioner to my hair and used a heat cap. I applied conditioner to my mother's hair with no use of heat. For me, I stayed under my heat cap for 15 minutes. My mother, I had to place a plastic cap and keep the conditioner on for 5 minutes. The RESULTS... My hair was nice and soft, just as I stated above. My mother's hair, was super soft and moisturized...hmmm, the product: we both used the O'Natural Natty Moist conditioner. I couldn't believe it..5 minutes with no heat and she achieved wonderful results.
  • It takes 15 minutes for hair to become saturated in pure water, whereas it takes 18 hours or more with steam or heat (heat cap or steamer) (source: Robbins, Chemical and Physical Behaviour of Human Hair, Springer). So, applying water directly over your hair through wetting is more than likely more useful than steam or vapor.
  • Side Note: Those who have hair that is of low porosity would benefit from using heat with their conditioner as it helps to lift the cuticle allowing the beneficial ingredients to help moisturize the hair.

DEEP CONDITIONING..WHAT MAKES IT BENEFICIAL?
  • The greatest thing about a conditioner are the added benefits that are helpful to retaining moisture. So, are there ingredients that are helpful when using a conditioner? Absolutely, but first, let me say this. Conditioning does not open the cuticle, they are actually formulated at lower pH levels to help close the cuticle  restore moisture and soften the hair from shampooing.. So, what does actually open the cuticle? Products made at higher pH levels have the capability of opening the cuticle and as well as, relaxers, texturizers, hair dyes, bleaching can open the cuticle..but, these are products that also break down the protein structure of the hair and cause dryness and other issues. We don't want to leave the cuticle open due to exposure to dirt, fungi, bacteria and other contaminants..hence the importance of conditioners, especially those formulated at lower pH levels such as 4.5-5.5 .

DEEP CONDITIONING AND STYLISTS
  • Now, here's a great question. Why do stylist offer deep conditioning? Well, ultimately, you must ask your stylist this..but, here are a few reasons they may do this: (1)  She is using a conditioner that requires the use of heat (hence why you sit under the dryer)  (2) There is an up-charge associated with deep conditioning  (3) The time you sit under the dryer (anywhere from 20-45 minutes) is used to work on another client.

DEEP CONDITIONING...WHAT INGREDIENTS PENETRATE THE CUTICLE?
  • Ahhh hah, now here's the important question. There are a few things in conditioners that actually penetrate the cuticle, such as a panthenol, only a  few oils and water. These oils are: olive oil, coconut oil and avocado oil.

DEEP CONDITIONING..WHAT'S THE PROPER WAY TO USE
  • Be sure when applying your conditioner, apply from root to tip, thoroughly.
  • Try not to just plop the conditioner on your top head. I like to part my hair and thoroughly apply to each section and really work it in.
  • Wet your hair thoroughly as to ensure that it doesn't dry out while applying your conditioner.
  • Try to look for conditioners that contain ingredients such as: olive oil, coconut oil or avocado oil, and if they do not, apply 1 TBSP of each and apply. Check out my how to condition video: HERE
  • If the conditioner softens in 25, 30, 45 minutes or even overnight, more than likely it would give you the same results in the recommended amount of the products directions of use. So, to sum it up, leaving the conditioner on for a longer period of time does not prove to be any more beneficial.

So, I hope this was as beneficial to you as it was to me..Now, you can continue to deep condition using your heat source or steam because it gives a wonderful feeling of treating ourselves, but just know, through my personal recent test, it doesn't provide any more benefits that just plain ole' applying, leaving it on for a few minutes, rinsing it out..hmmm, whouda thought.

Have a Happy Natty Day!!

Hola Chicas/Chicos..I pray all is well with everyone.
Ok, I have been blessed to meet and feature so many beautiful people for my blog and this one is, to no surprise, an absolute treat as well. Meet, Brandy, a beautiful model who has an excellent way to show that natural hair can be fun, edgy, sexy and extremely versatile. Not only is Brandy versatile with her fashion and hair, but she is also versatile in her home and work life. As a mom of 3 boys and 3 girls, Brandy is an awesome inspiration as a nurse and a professional manicurist, and...a model as well. With a jovial spirit, Brandy says that she is 'always looking for ways to improve in all aspects of life'. I know you will enjoy Brandy's 'Story' as much as I did..so, without further ado, meet the beautiful Brandy.

I'VE GOT A STORY TO TELL..BRANDY:

1. What inspired you to go natural?

What inspired me to go natural was the beauty of our hair and the culture behind it, the freedom and strength it brings to today's society. That being my natural beautiful self is a part of who I am. I have always been a big fan of natural hair, Afro wigs, kinky braids, twist etc. but was just too afraid to cross over or should I say back slide.

2. How long have you been a beautiful natural?

I began to transition in late October/November 2009...Then, one year I decided I wanted to go completely natural and that is when my journey began, June 16 2010. I have been natural for 1 year 3 months.

3. In regards to natural hair, do you feel as though the same stigmas of hair type exist, for example, do you hear people use the term 'good hair' or 'good grade of hair' in regards to certain hair textures?

Yes it definitely still exist in today's society and I believe it is based on how we were raised. With saying such as 'oh, you have nice hair' or 'your hair is nappy, but I have a perm in it'..lol true though.

4. Do you feel as though most black men are supportive to natural hair? How about other nationalities?

Yes, I believe that more men are coming to realize the beauty of our natural hair; The uniqueness and that we too can be beautiful, sexy, successful etc and hold our place in society with out having to fit in with the stigma that we are only beautiful with long straight locks. I love getting the compliments from men and women alike,it shows that they are embracing it. Especially when other Nationalities embraces it. It spreads world wide and it feels great to be apart of this as I call it 'Movement'!

5. How do you maintain such beautiful coils?

Well, Dominique (All Things O'Natural), you are a fountain of info and you have helped me immensely in my journey. I co-wash at least once every week or two. I just incorporated the Bentonite clay treatment into my regimen so I may just do that once or twice a month. I love Sheamoisture the Curl Enhancing Smoothie and the Deep Treatment Masque; they make my hair feel great! I also use the home made spritz to moisten my coils and seal with a butter or oil. I sleep in a satin bonnet or scarf. I do not use heat at all at this point. I may later I don't know. And I always, always do my finale rinse with ACV. A must! It has helped my hair and my scalp tremendously. Basically just TLC and patience.

6. Do you have any words of wisdom to pass on to others striving for a natural lifestyle?

Be Patient, patient, patient in your journey. It can get frustrating going from relaxed coils to kinky curly coils. Look for transitioning and protective styles from the web which is full of tutorials. This will also help when you are feeling like this isn't for me, when you see the many styles offered. Trim those ends often and keep them moisturized and protected. I applaud you on your natural hair journey. I'm Loving It ♥ Now where did i put my Pick? lol

Let's Talk Hair: Frustrating FAIRY KNOTS

Greetings, Beautiful People..I pray all is well with everyone.
Ok, so I love to write on subjects that I receive a lot of questions on..And one question in particular that I receive many inqiries on are dreadful 'fairy knots'. Throughout our return to O'Natural-ness, we have all experienced the haunting fairy knots and they can be extremely frustrating. Especially when we think we are doing all that we can to prevent them and keep our tresses healthy. So let's just take a look at this dilema and see if we can shed some light on this subject.

FAIRY KNOTS..What Are They?
  • Tiny Knots that appear on single strand of hair close to the hairs tips(ends). They are a common and a natural occurrence in kinky-curly hair.
  • They are caused by the hair having a tight curl pattern which results in the hair wrapping around itself resulting in a tiny single strand knot.

FAIRY KNOTS...What Causes Them?
  • Well, this is going to sound like a slight contradiction, but frequent wear of protective styles such as braid outs, twist outs or fros.
  • Not sealing the ends at night. Sealing your ends at night means to apply a butter or natural oil to the ends of your hair for extra moisture and protection at night before securing with a satin scarf or bonnet.

FAIRY KNOTS..How To Minimize Them
  • Moisturize, Seal and Protect those ends at night before bed by first moisturizing with water, a moisturizing mist or another water based product, then apply a heavy natural butter, such as shea butter, mango butter, avocado butter or other butters or oils such as extra virgin coconut oil, olive oil, avocado oil, jojoba and other oils to the ends (tips) of your hair, then cover with a satin bonnet, scarf or sleep on a satin pillowcase. Because our ends are the oldest and most fragile part of the hair, they tend to be the driest and come across the most friction. Moisturizing and sealing the ends daily or nightly proves to be a huge help in minimizing knots and dryness.
  • Keep tresses moisturized by proper conditioning, especially deep conditioning, and use an all natural leave in.
  • Minimize combing naturally curly-kinky hair while dry. Should you decide to detangle on dry hair, apply a light oil such as coconut oil, jojoba oil or grapeseed oil and gently begin finger detangling. When using a combing tool, always comb hair with a wide tooth comb or detangling brush while hair is soaking wet and slippery with conditioner. Comb starting from ends to roots.
  • If you have fairy knots, take some shears that have only been used on hair and cut them out immediately on sight. If the knots are left untreated, they will, more than likely, continue to knot up from the ends and cause breakage. (Fyi: breakage is when you do not see a white tip at the end of the fallen hair. When a white tip is seen, this is shedding which is a normal occurrence in the hair cycle).
  • A wonderful tip addition from a beautiful naturalista on the Natural Girls Rock group site said: After co-washing, completely rinse your hair, then take the oil of your choice, mix it with a little water and pour it all over your hair. Then, lightly rinse with cool water, known as 'oil rinsing'. She stated that she noticed a huge difference, thanks Kelli!!!
  • Though these tips may help, you may still experience some knots. Don't panic though they may be frustrating, they do not play a major role in hair loss nor not being able to retain length.

Ok, I hope this was as helpful to you as it was for me..Until next time, A bientot!!!

     Have a Happy Natty Day!!

I've Got A Story To Tell: Meet the Stunning KAI MCKINNON

Greetings Everyone..I pray all is well with everyone.
Well we have another treat of a feature today with Kai McKinnon. Kai is a beautiful natural whom I've had the pleasure of meeting on Facebook. I recently had the pleasure of meeting Kai at the World Natural Hair Show on September 10, 2011. Kai was an absolute pleasure to meet in person along with her beautiful baby girl and her two beautiful sisters. Her smile is even more beautiful in person than on pictures..So, without furthur ado, meet Kai McKinnon.

    1. What Inspired You To Go O'Natural?
My natural journey started, like so many others, with the birth of my daughter Olivia Marie. At the time, I wasn’t even thinking of going natural. I had shoulder length hair that had grown longer and thicker during my pregnancy and I loved it. I put flat twists in during and after the birth so I wouldn’t have to worry about it. About 3 months after the baby was born it started falling out by the handful! I knew I would lose some but this frightened me. I was afraid to comb it! I lost all of my sides and my hair was so thin. On top of that, all the yummy smelling J&J baby products I received during my baby shower was causing my baby’s skin to break out and her hair was so dry. I turned to the internet for help. I came across a lot of websites talking about natural products and the reasons for dry thin hair and I started using only all natural products on her. The Shea Moisture baby line is wonderful! I then made the decision to go natural to be an inspiration for her. How could I raise her to embrace and love her self if I wasn’t doing the same? I dove right in and soaked up so much information. I found your website during a search and spent a blissful week reading your posts from day 1. I learned so much information and felt so ignorant about what relaxers had been doing to my hair. I had been relaxed since I was 10. I was going to do a long transition for a year. I used curlformers which I loved and roller sets-no heat! I stopped using chemicals cold turkey and started with all natural products starting with the Shea Moisture line which I heart! About 3 months in I got Senegalese twists which I loved. I kept them in for about 6 weeks using a daily leave in conditioner spray that I made myself. After 6 weeks I tried to take them out and my hair was so matted and tangled that I spent 3 hours trying to detangle. I gave up and yanked and pulled and tore until I was left with hair to my ear, a sore scalp, and tears. I went to the salon the next day and did my BC. I have never regretted that decision and I’m in love with my TWA!

2.How long have you been a beautiful natural?

My last relaxer was January 15th and I did my BC on June 26th. I did another mini buzz to shape and get the last of the frizz off on July 15th. I have about 2 ½ to 2 ¾ inches of hair right now. If anyone would have told me a year ago I would have a Grace Jones and love it I would have called them crazy!

    3. In regards to natural hair, do you feel as though the same stigmas of hair type exist, for example, do you hear people use the term 'good hair' or 'good grade of hair' in regards to certain hair textures?

I definitely feel there is a stigma about “good vs bad hair.” I hear comments like “oh I could never go natural because I don’t have that kind of hair”.  I tell them there is no such thing, hair is hair, it’s all good hair because its GOD given. Stereotypes are perpetuated in music videos and on tv because all you see are long haired (weaved) women. Very rarely do you see natural Black hair and when you do it’s always loose wavy curls. Until we learn to embrace what grows naturally out of our hair we will never overcome the negative stereotypes that other ethnicities place upon us.

    4. Do you feel as though most black men are supportive to natural hair? How about other nationalities?

I think that it is starting to become a little more accepted by our Black men, especially as more and more women embrace it. My husband is still struggling with his acceptance though. He supports my decision, yet doesn’t really care for it yet. He thinks my hair cut looks better than he thought it would but doesn’t really touch it because he says it reminds him of a boy. I tell him he’s just going to have to get used to it and I’m doing it for our daughter. Plus, its hair! It will grow out again. I think other nationalities are more accepting because they are used to Black women being “creative” in our hair styles and they view this as another way we can style our hair. I will say I’ve been getting a lot of positive response from all men since I cut my hair. I think its because I have stepped up my makeup and style game to match my new found confidence and love of self!

    5. How do you maintain such beautiful coils?

I don’t have a strict regimen but I make sure I cover the basics. I co wash a few times a week, shampoo maybe once a week or when I want to try a new product on freshly washed hair. I try to deep condition once a week using Shea Moisture DC mask and add olive oil and honey, and I moisturize with water or water based leave in and seal with an oil or butter. My favorite products right now are Shea Moisture for shampoo/conditioner, V05 Moisture milk for my co washes, Kinky Curly Knot today for a leave in, and Kinky Curly Curly Custard for my wash n go’s. For moisture I love shea butter based moisturizers and I use Naturalista Cosmetics Juicy leave in and your Natty Butter.  I usually do a wash n go and put in a headband. I also did my first teeny afro. I sleep on a satin pillowcase.

    6. Do you have any words of wisdom to pass on to others striving for a natural lifestyle?

Keep it simple and DO YOUR RESEARCH!!! I dove right into finding as much information as possible so when I was ready to chop, I was ready! I knew which products I wanted to try, I had a basic regimen, and I knew how to maintain my natural hair. If you jump right in without any background information you are apt to slip right back into a perm because it’s “easier”. Also, start off simple. I could never find a basic regimen. Here’s a good one: Co wash 2-3 x a week, shampoo on Sundays followed by a DC. Wet hair with water or use a water based leave in conditioner, seal with a butter or oil. Cover your head or pillow with satin. That’s really all you need! Also, try not to become a product junky. I admit I was obsessed with products until I found all of things I like. Find some good bloggers and facebook pages like this one and enjoy your new freedom!

Scalp Issues? These Ingredients Could Be The Cause

Hola Chicas/Chicos..I pray all is well with everyone!!
So, if you know me, or follow me on my FB fan page, you know that I am a fanatic about all natural and organic ingredients. Not only do I love them because of the joy it brings to have healthy hair, but I love that I don't have to be concerned about serious side effects that many synthetic ingredients can carry.

Throughout this journey, I have come across many many people who struggle with scalp issues (dandruff, dry scalp, itchy scalp, psoriasis, dermatitis, alopecia). Now I know that diet, stress and allergies can aid in these issues, but another important factor that plays its part well in aiding in these issues are harsh synthetic ingredients. So, let's just take a glance at some of the ingredients that are in shampoos, conditioners and stylers that can cause scalp issues.

    Lauryl and Laureth Sulfates:
Detergents are the ingredients used in shampoos to bind with oil and dirt so they can be rinsed away. Common detergents in shampoos include sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate and the related ammonium lauryl sulfate and ammonium laureth sulfate. These ingredients are also surfactants--ingredients that change the surface tension of water. They are responsible for the thick foaming or lathering action provided by some shampoos. These ingredients causes greater irritation to the skin the longer they are in contact with the skin. The sodium lauryl sulfate found in our soaps is exactly the same as you would find in a car wash or even a garage, where it is used to degrease car engines. It is also well documented that it denatures skin proteins, which causes not only irritation, but also allows environmental contaminants easier access to the lower, sensitive layers of the skin. SLS is also absorbed into the body from skin application. Once it has been absorbed, one of the main effects of sodium lauryl sulfate is to mimic the activity of the hormone Oestrogen. This has many health implications and may be responsible for a variety of health problems from PMS and Menopausal symptoms to dropping male fertility and increasing female cancers such as breast cancer, where oestrogen levels are known to be involved.

    Triethanolamine:

TEA-lauryl sulfate, or triethanolamine lauryl sulfate, is another detergent, surfactant and foam-boosting chemical found in shampoos, conditioners and stylers (namely EcoStyler Gel). Determined dangerous by the FDA as early as 1977, nitrosamines penetrate skin and cause damage to skin cells, including sores on the scalp.

    Fragrance:

Fragrance is what gives shampoos their pleasing scents. Sometimes fragrance agents are identified by name--geraniol, linalool and citronellol are just some examples of naturally-derived fragrance chemicals. Sometimes the term “fragrance” is listed among ingredients. Unfortunately, a listing for fragrance or parfum can indicate the presence of up to 4,000 different chemicals.

    Penetration Enhancers:

Penetration enhancers are seen most commonly in moisturizing shampoos or two-in-one shampoos and conditioners. These ingredients increase the amount of moisture that penetrates the hair follicle by chemically altering the structure of the hair to allow entry to emollient ingredients.Although approved by the FDA for use in cosmetics, penetration enhancers may cause long-term damage to your skin and hair. Because they push chemicals deeply into the skin and hair, these ingredients may ravage your skin over time, causing dryness, sores, rashes and an overall feeling of pain or itchiness. Absorption enhancers include propylene glycol, ammonium glycolate, disodium EDTA and lecitin. These ingredients usually serve double duty as humectants or preservatives.

Ok, I hope this help. Not only do we want to ensure we have healthy hair and scalp, but healthy insides as well..

    Happy Healthy Day!

    Dominique's Review:

Ok, I must first say, the smell is UNBELIEVABLE! And if you know me and have followed my blog or follow me on my Facebook fan page at All Things O'Natural, you know that I am a sucker for Ayurvedic all natural products. Though I am not a product junkie and am very faithful to my products and regimen, this definitely caught my attention..and you may also know that I love and commend those who make their own products. Now, on to the results. I like to use a product after I have stripped older product from my hair using the Bentonite Clay treatment so I can truly see how a product works. After I cleansed my hair, I sprayed my hair with my Ayurvedic herbal moisturizing spritz that I made, then applied the Creme Brulee in sections, then twisted my hair. Once dry, I untwisted using my O'Natural Natty Butter and here are my thoughts...I absolutely loved loved loved the way that my hair felt. It was soft like terry cotton and it smelled (O)mazing!. So, does the Creme Brulee do what it claims? Absolutely..the product left my hair soft and moist and with the addition of my Natty Butter, shiny as well. In comparison to the SheaMoisture Deep Treatment Masque, the Masque leaves my hair a tad bit heavier, but a tad bit more moisturized..or let me say wet to the touch. The Creme Brulee didn't leave my hair wet to the touch, but it didn't leave it nowhere near dry.It was light fluffy and my twists moved about freely. I did like the way that it held up in the hot conditions with little shrinkage or frizz.. So, would I recommend this product? Absolutely..just for the scent alone, it could stop a war..but all in all, I loved the results, the softness, bounciness and shine in combination with my Natty Butter was awesome, I loved the consistency and did I say that I loved the smell? Well, I loved the smell.

Let's Talk GOOD EATS: Chattanooga's BACK INN CAFE

Greetings Chicas/Chicos..I pray all is well with everyone.
So, if you know me, you know that I love to eat. But, not just eat anything, but good food is such a pleasure that I take very seriously. One thing that my husband and I have come to understand, is how we appreciate being able to have a date night and enjoy a nice evening meal with a wonderful glass of wine. Of course, before our team of children we dined out quite often, so it wasn't as appreciated as it is now as we only enjoy date nights monthly, sometimes twice per month, definitely thanks to being close to my parents and my grandmother for support in watching our children.

Now, I must say, I recently moved back to Chattanooga in November of 2010 after being away for 12 years living in Atlanta, GA. And I am pleasantly amazed at all of the wonderful sights, restaurants, beauty and festivals that Chattanooga has to offer. It is definitely an amazingly beautiful place and has been voted as one of the top places to visit for tourists in the world.

So, here's the scoop on the Back Inn Cafe in the Bluff View District in Chattanooga, TN. Enjoy!!

    The Scoop:
    • Located in a renovated Colonial Revival Mansion, Back Inn Café offers upscale global cuisine with an extensive wine list. The menu changes seasonally to provide our guests with fresh dishes and the latest innovations in fine cuisine. You may choose to sit in our peaceful library, one of two romantic sunrooms, or outside on the terrace overlooking the river. Reservations suggested but not required.
    • New Special: Wine Wednesdays at Back Inn Café: every Wednesday from 5pm - 9pm you can get 1/2 price wine from our selected wine list, over 40 wines to choose from!

    Lobster Bisque

    The Entrees:

Rembrandt's Roasting Company Rubbed New York Strip

     Shrimp and Grits

    The Coctails:

    The Desert:
    Creme Brule w/Fresh Berries

The Ambiance: The restaurant is in beautiful Bluff View Historic District and the decor gives you a feel of a wonderfully maintained elegant bed and breakfast with the hardwood floors, large moulding framing the windows, the cedar beamed ceilings. I loved the option to eat in or outside with the same view of the Tennessee River.

Our Review: The food was absolutely exquisite! The first bite of the scallops, the lobster bisque, both entrees and the desert was absolutely amazing! The seasonings were just right and I loved the actual crescent shape of the grit cakes with the shrimp and grit entree..Definitely an A in our books. The services spectacular! The Ambiance breathtaking! Overall, it was a very enjoyable experience..2 Happy Campers!

Remember, it is not only healthy for your relationship, it's O'Natural to take time away from your busy lives and enjoy the company of your loved one...So, where you going for Date Night!!
