Salon Talk: VETTE Gives Us The Scoop on URBANELLA

Greetings Chicas/Chicos..I pray all is well with everyone.
Ok, so we are featuring a salon, Urbanella, by none other than the beautiful Vette of Atlanta. Vette is here to give us the scoop on her experience at Urbanella. This is so important because so many naturals are in search of salons to visit and who will take care of their O'Natural tresses in a wonderful way. So, let's here what Vette has to say about her visit to Urbanella.

SALON TALK...URBANELLA

1, Name of the salon and where located

141 W Wieuca Rd NE suite 202A
Atlanta, Georgia

2. Wait time (this is a huge pet peeve of mine..waiting in salons all day)

I made an appointment for the consultation, followed by style. They tell you to come with clean hair so they can try out products before the style. I arrived 15 minutes before my appointment time. They had me fill out an indepth questionaire asking questions like what was my reason for needing a consultation, what are my biggest hair issues(styling, product, dry hair, frizzy hair, damaged hair, etc...), what style did I come in for...
3. Level of professionalism

I feel Tandria (receptionist/the lady who provided my consultation) was very professional, informative, and patient (with the number of questions I asked).
4. Stylist you met with

Britney-stylist
Tandria- receptionist/consultation lady

5. Ambiance

As soon as you enter the lobby...products galore! It was, hands down, the biggest area of the shop. The salon itself seems to be a more intimate setting. It was off in the back, which was VERY small. One wash bowl. Two hair dryers. One hair steamer. And a small couch (covered with too many pillows) to sit on if you had to wait. They did offer water and tea to drink. They also made sure that I was not to hot/cold and was willing to adjust the temperature in the room (I was the first client that morning).
6. Your experience

When you first walk into the salon, you can tell right away it's all about product advertisement.  As soon as you walk in, there are shelves full of the most expensive "natural hair products" out there. The staff itself was very friendly and informative when it came to my consultation and product demonstration. During my consultation, Tandria told me that I might just need to dust my ends and work on deep conditioning to up my moisture before I can get to my main issues- length and styling options. Ok no big-y, we can work on that..see what you can do for me. She raked a couple different product lines thru different sections of my hair, and twist other sections, to get a feel for the product and style that would be best for my texture (4B). On to the next step...now, as far as my styling...the wash/detangle felt very nice, and I did get the deep condition w/steamer. While I was under the steamer, they offered me another beverage and handed me the "Hair Rules" book to read. So far so good...until...after rinsing and sitting me in the chair, the stylist (Britney) told me that the way my hair was growing in, it looked like a mullet and that I needed the back TRIMMED to give it a better shape...alittle embarrased, I say..."um ok...go ahead and TRIM". But as she started in on the back, I look in the mirror...OMG it looked like the whole back of my head was starting all over in the BC process! She trimmed the front and CUT the back! Now, on the questionairre they clearly asked what style did I want, and I know I wrote down scalp braids on the sides, two strand twists down the middle so when I did a twist out I'd have a cute hawk. I don't know where in the description of my style did they get "cut and shingle Kinky Curly throughout my hair"! But that's exactly what she did! As she started to apply KC, I asked her about my twists, she tells me, "well with the 'trim', you'd look great with a nice wash-n-go"...EXCUSE YOU, COME AGAIN!?!?! So she starts in on this rave of KC and how much easier it would be now that I got a "trim" . The PJ in me said, "well, I HAVE been wanting to try Kinky Curly..." When she was "finished" (I think she purposely placed herself in front of the mirror to block my view), she moves and DARES to ask me how do I like it! ARE YOU SERIOUS!?! It looked like I had been sleeping in a bag of marshmellow (one of the ingredients in KC)! My hair looked matted with white film in it! I'm looking like, is that it?! She says you'll see the curls definition and the film will evaporate once it dries all the way. She walks me to the register and picks out all kinda KC products for me to purchase. Didn't even walk me over to the items so that I can ask who/what/where/when/why/how/NOTHING! Just grabbed them herself and basically wrote out my bill (almost $300)! Like DANG, you're not even going to go over the items with me or tell me what to do with this stuff?! My stylist didn't even take the time to write out my TO DO list for me, the consultant wrote it (ex. shampoo with this, condition with this, moisturize with this, etc...) But being that they're the hair stylist, what could I say or do?! Had to let it dry and go from there, right?! To make an already long story short (the next morning) not only did the film NOT go away (looked like white little balls all over my head),  my hair was hard, dry, and smushed! Now I can't style worth a damn, but shoot I KNOW I coulda did a better job by taking some gel and shingling it thru my head myself! So ofcourse I called them with my complaint and they said they could do a complimentary rewash/style it if I could come in...UM...YEA! When I get there, the manager washed, detangled, deep conditioned with the steamer, and all that good stuff herself (IMPRESSIVE). And that part I loved, even the first time. But now it wuz back in the stylists chair (and I'm guessing Britney was the only stylist). Do you know she tells me she can style it the same way free of charge...ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?! I'm thinking, If I didn't like the style when I left here yesterday, what'd you think was going to happen when I left today?! She tells me that once I up my moisture level, products won't sit on top of my hair (oh so it's my hair's fault that your styling SUX)! As best as I can, I politely tell her NO, I WANT TWISTS! So she ended up doing mini two strand twists all over let them dry and did a twistout (of course for an extra $50)  I traded in the Kinky Curly products for Hair Rules (what she used to twist my hair) and some Jane Carter Products(Natural Holding Spray to spray my hair after I twist and to use as a heat protectant to sit under the dryer 5-10 minutes, and Nourishing Shine for oil when I twist out. That NS smells really good...but other than that I don't c the big deal-will not repurchase either).
7. Would you recommend?

I will say the customer service was excellent (except that stylists comment about my hair growing in like a mullet and that it's my hair's fault that the Kinky Curly didn't work)-HOW RUDE! I did actually liked the turn out when I left the Salon the 2nd time(with the twistout). But truthfully, there really wouldn't have been a reason to get a redo if they would've followed my requests from the questionaire (I mean what's the point of having me write down the style I desire if you have it made up in your mind you're going to do it the way YOU want to anyway)! To spend $300+ for all that hassle...I would not recommend going to Urbanbella...unless you have the $$$ to blow... ;-P
Wow..thank you so much Vette for your thorough review of Urbanella..not quite the experience I would welcome in my search for a natural hair salon. Well, here you have it ladies and gents..I hope this was helpful. Until next time, see ya later gator!!

I've Got A Story To Tell: Meet the Beautiful Naturalista KT

Hola Chicas/Chicos..I pray all is well with everyone.
Ok, so brace yourself, because this is definitely going to be a treat. I was contacted by a beautiful natural, Allison, who follows my blog and really wanted to inspire our future Naturalistas by telling her absolutely beautiful 10 year old daughter's story. I must admit, I became slightly emotional reading the story and just by the meer fact that this could be the future for our youth; embracing their beauty..Naturally. From the words of her mother, ' She is a great role model, and we've got a wonderful STORY TO TELL.' So, I know you all will enjoy KT and Allison's story.

I've Got a Story To Tell...KT

1. What inspired your daughter to do a BC in a world that is inspired by a certain standard of beauty of having long straight hair?

Well, my daughter was going into the the 4Th grade and against my better judgement I allowed her to get a relaxer. It was awful!!! Within 2 weeks her hair broke off and was dry and brittle. So in doing some research about relaxers I came across a lot of information about natural hair. When I figured out that the only way to get the relaxer out of your hair was to cut it. I began preparing myself and KT for the transition. We watched a ton of YouTube videos and when she saw all the different styles you can do with natural hair she began to get excited!

2.Do you feel the same stigma of 'good hair' in terms of a certain texture still plague our youth today?

That an interesting question. I think things are slowly changing with my daughter's generation. She has friends with all types of hair and I've never heard her or her 10 year old friends say "Girl You've got GOOD HAIR"  Unfortunately I thinks its the uneducated adults who keep the stigma going.

3. What are some of the things that your daughter love about her gorgeous BC?

She loves her beautiful curls and the fact that it only takes around 10-15 minutes to style her hair in the morning.

4. Has she experienced any negative comments from family or friends at school?

For the most part everyone has been extremely supportive but there were a couple of people who didn't respond to the email I sent out with photos of her BC. But its ok. I know in my heart I did the best thing for my daughter! Since its the summer and she's in camp, almost everyday I pick her up she always has this glowing smile on her face and tells me how "ANOTHER person said she reminded them of Willow Smith"   So far she hasn't directly received any negative comments.

5. How do you maintain her beautiful tresses?
We are still pretty new to the natural process. We do a lot of wash-n-go styles. I use Eco-Styler, Aubrey Organics shampoo/ conditioner, and also olive oil to style KT's hair. I'm not a product junkie yet but I'm itching to buy new products.

6.How do think the wave of Natural hair beauties are affecting the overall image of our young girls today?

I think it's wonderful all the great websites and information that's out there about natural hair for ladies. But if there was a tween magazine or someone on TV with natural hair, the image of young black girls with natural hair would take off. It was so hard to finding anyone on the internet that was close to KT's age that she could look up too.  I did finds photos of Raven Symone and her natural hair cut. My daughter feel in love with her photos!!! And I truly think that was a changing point during her transition.

7.What advice would you give mothers/fathers of tween girls who are considering returning to and maintaining their natural hair?

I read on a website " Would you rather have long hair that's in terrible condition or would you rather have a head full of healthy beautiful curls" That sentence right there tells it all. I also would advice parents  to check out videos on YouTube WITH their child. When KT and I found someone with the same hair type it was really cool to watch this ladies videos and get a glimpse into the future of what her hair would look like a year from now, etc..YouTube has been a lifesaver! Also I think I've learned something about myself during this whole process. My hair is at totally different texture than my daughters. Her hair is mostly 4B and my hair is 3C. I've always flat ironed my hair straight but because of  KT I might just start wearing it curly so I can look like her! :)

What an awesome awesome story Allison and KT and thank you so much for sharing. KT will definitely be an inspiration for other young beauties in embracing their natural hair. Congratulations, Mom..you are definitely heading in the right direction.

Let's Talk Hair: EMOLLIENTS For Shiny Hair

Hola Chicas/Chicos..I pray all is well with everyone.

Ok, so we all are or have been in a search for the latest greatest product that promises to do something that many of us wish to have..Achieve healthy and shiny hair. Well, we ask the question..what is that makes hair so shiny? Why are some tresses more shiny than others?

Well, here's the skinny on hair and dryness. Curly, Kinky or Coily hair texture tends to be dryer although all scalps produce the same amount of oil. The reason straight hair and wavy hair looks shinier is that due to the straighter texture, it is easier for the oils to spiral down the hair strand, whereas with curlier hair, the oils do not make it down the strand of the hair. Whew..so now that we've gotten that out of the way. There are ways to keep curlier hair moisturized: deep conditioners, using sulfate free shampoos, cool water and apple cider vinegar rinses, etc. Ok, yea, that's all fine, but how do I get my hair to  not only feel moisturized, but 'look' shiny as well? Hmmm...very good question, so let's delve into how to get the hair to not only feel but look shiny too!!!

EMOLLIENTS...WHAT ARE THEY?
  • Emollients are commonly referred to as ingredients that soften or treat dry skin. They are usually forms of oil or grease. And they work by increasing the skin and hair's ability to hold water. Now, water is the absolute best and truest moisturizer, but because it evaporates quickly, it can be ineffective once the hair dries. This is where other emollients come in to play. Water, because it evaporates quickly, needs to be held on the skin or hair by emollient oils in what is called emulsion.

EMOLLIENTS..SYNTHETIC

Synthetic emollients are occlusive i.e. they coat the skin and do not allow it to respire (much like plastic wrap), which can cause skin irritation. So, basically they coat the hair, but do not allow moisture to penetrate which in turn causes dryness and many times frizziness, once the emollient is removed. Some synthetic emollients can accumulate in the liver and lymph nodes. They are also non-biodegradable, causing a negative environmental impact.

Types of Synthetic Emollients

  • PEG compounds (eg PEG- 45 Almond Glyceride) may contain the toxic by-product dioxane
  • Synthetic alcohols (anything that contains the phrase benzyl –, butyl-, cetearyl-, cetyl -, glyceryl-, isopropyl-, myristyl propyl-, propylene-, or stearyl-) eg Isopropyl Palmitate, Diglyceryl Caprylate) have been shown to cause allergies and dermatitis.
  • Hydrocarbons (eg mineral oil, petrolatum, paraffin) contain carcinogenic and mutagenic Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) and can cause chemically induced acne.
  • Silicone Oils (eg dimethicone, cyclomethicone, copolyol) can clog the skin like plastic wrap and cause tumours when painted on lab animals (according to the Material Safety Data Sheet supplied by the manufacturer).

NATURAL EMOLLIENTS..
Natural emollients actually nourish the skin and care for it. They are metabolised by the skin’s own enzymes and absorbed into it. They are readily biodegradable and are of edible quality.

Types of Natural Emollients
  • Jojoba
  • Avocado
  • Rosehip
  • Shea,
  • Cupuacu
  • Cocoa
  • Jojoba Butters
  • Apricot Kernel Oil
  • Argan Oil
  • Avacado Oil
  • Borage Seed Oil
  • Castor Oil
  • Extra Virgin Coconut Oil
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • Grapeseed Oil
  • Hazel Nut Oil
  • Macadamia Nut Oil
  • Mango Butter
  • Pumpkin Seed Oil
  • Rose Hip Oil
  • Sesame Oil
  • Sunflower Seed Oil
  • Walnut Oil
  • Sweet Almond Oil

If you all follow me on my youtube  or my  Facebook you may have heard me say that I use a either water or a water based moisturizer first, then seal using my O'Natural Natty Butter for sealing in the moisture and providing sheen. Or I will melt my butter down to an oil form for an after styling sheen. I love the Natty Butter because it contains a lot of the natural emollients listed above and works wonders for the health and shine of my hair. You can select any of the following natural emollients, mix them together and apply to your hair for a wonderful after style sheen..

So, bottom line, curly hair is not naturally shiny due to the texture and the inability of the natural oils to flow down the hair follicle..so we have to help the hair out by first adding moisture to it (water based moisturizer) and then holding the moisture in (adding a butter or oil based sealer).

Hope this helps, Naturals...Have A Happy Healthy Shiny Hair Day!!

Curltopia located in Smyrna, GA (suburb of Atlanta) is a high end salon that specializes in healthy natural hair. I've Got A Story To Tell: Meet the Beautiful NATASHA GIPSON

Hola Chicas/Chicos..I pray all is well with everyone.

Well today we are hearing a story from a very pretty naturalista, Natasha Gipson. I think her story is awesome and can serve as inspiration for those who are struggling with their journey to keep pushing forward..so, with further ado..let's hear Natasha's story.

MEET NATASHA GIPSON..

1. What inspired you to go natural?

I was inspired to go natural when (the second time) when my daughter turned a year old (2009 December) She has these beautiful curls and I loved the way her hair looked when it free!  But looking at her always made me fear the day that she would ask me, "Mommy, why is your hair straight and mine curly, I want straight hair like yours". I wanted to be able to teach her to love her coils by being the ultimate example, loving mine. So almost a year later OCT 2010, I did the BIG CHOP! (my lengthy story on http://ifthesekinkscldtalk.blogspot.com)

2. How long have you been a beautiful natural?

I have been natural for 6 months, 2 weeks, and 5 days (smile)..LOL

3. In regards to natural hair, do you feel as though the same stigmas of hair type exist, for example, do you hear people use the term 'good hair' or 'good grade of hair' in regards to certain hair textures?

Yes, those stigmas are definitely out there. I wasn't even aware that there was actually a hair type system until I started reading different blogs and websites on natural hair. At first I was a little weary, but I do think that hair typing can be a helpful tool when trying to find what works for your hair. However, in my opinion, natural hair possesses very unique traits in EVERY individual, so it is still kind of difficult to "generalize" the different types.

4. Do you feel as though most black men are supportive to natural hair? How about other nationalities?

I feel that most AFRICAN AMERICAN men are not necessarily "attracted" to black women with natural hair and its a shame, but to each HIS own. I think some of them have truly allowed themselves to be conditioned to view beautiful hair as straight, wavy, long...etc.  I think that other nationalities accept it more because they already expect to see black women with curly, kinky, hair or wavy hair, or whatever.  I think that Blacks in general have a tendency to react different when we see other nationalities with styles that are designed for our hair types as well (i.e. white people with locks or cornrolls)

5. How do you maintain such beautiful coils?

I initially did not know that moisturizing your hair daily was a must when you are a natural, so I was looking a HOT MESS! After a few trial and error episodes with various products, I've found my nitch with Carol's Daughter "Healthy Hair Butter", Coconut Oil,  Kemi Oil and any sulfate free, sweet smelling shampoo/conditioner i can get my hands on. Right now I am a fan of Brazilian Keratin brand.  I twist my hair with the butter every night now, sleep with a silk scarf, untwist it in the morning, and style.  I hope to discover more products that have less "fluff" in the ingredients and just good wholesome nutrients for my hair. I am in the military, so moisturizing my hair daily is a must because I wear at a wool cap every day! As my hair gets longer it has become a bigger challenge to stay within the strict standards that the military places on females in the military, but I'm maintaining professionalism right now by wearing a puff! My hair is finally long enough to do a puff!

6. Do you have any words of wisdom to pass on to others striving for a natural lifestyle?

Yes, I would definitely tell others striving for a natural lifestyle to listen to their heart and go for it!  I think that youtube, and other websites like yours and CurlyNikki's are a huge help for sisters who need to know more before they do the  BIG CHOP! Its worth it, and as for me, I am never looking back!  I would also say that the term "garbage in, garbage out" is so true. The better foods you eat, the more nutrients you put in your body, the better you feel and look, that is a fact!  Being natural can be challenging at time, it takes work, lots of patience, research and support, but its soo soo worth it!

THE PRETTY GIRL, NATASHA
Well, I hope you all enjoyed Natasha's story as much as I did and please stop by her page listed above and see her full story on her journey..Thank you so much, Natasha!

If you have a story to tell, please send an email request to allthingsonatural@yahoo.com and use the header "I've Got A Story'

Happy Healthy Day

My Product Is All Natural...I THINK!!

Hola Chicas/Chicos..I pray all is well with everyone..
So, let's get right down to the nitty gritty!!! This is about shedding some light on natural products and products that appear to be 'O'Natural. I have been doing some research on ingredients to find out the real truth about them so that I can furthur know what I am putting on my hair, on my skin which in turn can travel throughout  my body. Hmmm, so why is this necessarily important..well, glad you asked, since the CDC is out of control with new cases of cancer and health related issues, many of the chemicals that are found in beauty products are not necessarily regulated so they are not monitored as closely as other things, such as food and medicine. And facts have shown that many of the harsh chemicals found in shampoos, conditioners, stylers and skin care products have been linked to asthma, cancer, eczema, psoriasis, dandruff and so on.

Fortunately, there is a very simple way to differentiate between the hype and the truth in skin care and that is to read the ingredient list on the label. It's a legal requirement that all skin care products, natural or otherwise, must be labelled with the ingredients in descending order of their quantity in the product. A good rule of thumb is to divide the ingredient list into thirds: the top third usually contains 90-95% of the product, the middle third usually contains 5-8% and the bottom third, 1-3%.
So, because I find it extremely important, I felt it extremely important to equip each one of you with the same knowledge..so here goes!!

The  SO-CALLED NATURAL List...

Natural or Organic ingredients include
1 Water (deionised)
2 Isopropyl Palmitate (Palm Oil Derivative) derived from Isopropyl Alcohol which is a synthetic drying alcohol.
3 Apricot Kernel Oil (Take not that this is 3rd on the list, which means that this particular product is mostly water and Isopropyl Palmitate)
4 Bis-Digyceryl Caprylate/Caprate/Isosterate/Stearate/ Hydroxysterate Adipate (vegetable Triglyceride)
5 Glyceryl Stearate SE (vegetable derived)
6 Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride (glycerin-derived emollient)
7 Ceteareth - 12 (Organic Emulsifier)
8 Tocopherol Oil (vitamin E)
9 Chamomile Extract
10 Sage Extract
11 Linden Extract (Lime Blossom Extract)
12 Balm Mint Extract
13 Shea Butter (From Karite)
14 Wheat Germ Oil
15 Carrot Oil
16 Cetyl Alcohol (organic Co-emulsifier)
17 Sodium Hydroxide (pH Adjuster)
18 Sorbic Acid (Organic Compound)
19 Tocopherol Acetate (vitamin E Derivative)
20 Methyl Paraben
21 Propyl Paraben
22 Imidazolidinyl Urea (Organic Compound)
23 Fragrance
24 FD & C Yellow No 5, D7C Red No. 33.
Content: Apricot oil (2.5%)

Important Info About the List Above:
  • #5 & 6 are largely synthetic..synthetic glycerin to be exact. These ingredients have been known to cause dermatitis and cause allergies.
  • #7 is a synthetic emulsifier. Both are known carcinogens.
  • #8-15 are actual natural ingredients. However, they are so far down on the list that the quantities are extremely minimal. And many times, this is to make the product look good.
  • #17 Is otherwise known as caustic soda or lye - a powerful drain cleaner extremely alkaline and corrosive. A known sensitizer for many people with sensitive skin.
  • #18 Sorbic acid was once isolated from the Mountain Ash berry, but is now chemically synthesised and is a toxic preservative. No longer natural!
  • #19 is synthetic Vitamin E
  • #20-22 are toxic and allergenic preservatives which have been linked to increasing oestrogen levels in women and is implicated in the rising incidence of breast cancer.
  • #23 Probably synthetic, may contain phthalates that have been linked to birth defects. Phthalates are toxic gender bending chemicals found in virtually everyone tested for them. It is certainly not natural to have phthalates in your body or on your skin I can assure you. I know some of you love love love those smell good poos and conditioners..but try to look for ingredients that include essential oils for fragrance
  • #24 Synthetic colours that could be potentially carcinogenic. So those pink and blue poos and conditioners, moisturizers and stylers.

Let's Talk Hair: My Regimen for FRIZZ FREE Hair That Lasts

As of today, my twist out is 6 days old

Hola Chicas/Chicos..I pray all is well with everyone..

So, today I am going to quickly cover how I keep my hair moist, yet frizz free, during these hot and humid summer months.. I have been receiving a lot of emails in regards to my regimen and keeping these coils tight and controlled during this heat wave. So, for all that have inquired..thank you and I am happy to share what works for me. Now, I have oobbber thick and coarse hair, so results may vary..please keep that in mind, but if you use products that contain anti humectants, then you are definitely on a path to great 'frizz free' hair. And if you haven't already, please see my post on 'Humectants and Anti Humectants'.

My Hot Weather Regimen:
  • I co-wash using my Natty Moist Conditioner (weekly). I actually have not co-washed since Saturday due to my extremely busy schedule, so I'm operating on a 6 day twist out as of today..the pic above was taken yesterday, so that's how my 5 day twist out is looking.I always do a final rinse using ACV rinse or I spray my hair after washing with my Natty ACV Hair and Scalp mist to help close the cuticle and minimize frizz.
  • Style using  either my Natty ACV Hair and Scalp Mist to dampen my hair or my Natty Moist as my deep conditioner and as my leave in and moisture styler...
  • O'Natural Natty Butter..I love love love this product because it is an anti humectant, but the properties still allow moisture to penetrate my hair follicle without causing my hair to swell and frizz..So, I am getting my H2O and sealing it in at the same time.. So, bottom line, my hair is moisturized and the moisture doesn't escape.
  • Retwist. I retwist every other night or every 2 nights in medium to large sized twists..I do this because I want a little fullness that I wouldn't necessarily achieve if I retwist every night..Because I try to moisturize my hair so well, I don't need to apply it every time I re twist. So, I may use my Natty Moist or ACV Mist and Natty Butter on day 3 of my twist out..I'm telling ya, this stuff packs a heck of a moisture punch.
  • Protect: I protect my hair by either sleeping on a satin pillow or cover my head with a satin bonnet. But I ALWAYS protect my tresses at night.
  • Take Down: I use a tiny tiny bit of my Natty Butter when I take down, and this is only if my hair feels as if it needs it or if I am going to be in the hot humid weather for a long period of time..Remember, it is an anti humectant. Learn to know your hair and when it needs moisture and when it doesn't because too much of the Natty Butter can cause greasiness...you don't want that.. You want moisture, not grease head!!

So, that's it guys, my regimen to combat this weather and stay frizz free, yet moisturized. No, you do not have to use the exact products that I use, just be sure to read your labels and look for the proper ingredients to combat the enemy of frizziness..I hope this helps and hit me on Facebook or leave a comment for any questions, comments or tips..But keep in mind, keep the hair moisturized moisturized moisturized in these hot summer months...
